One Laptop Per (Grown-Up) Child

There was a nice surprise waiting for us when we got back from our Christmas visit to family in El Paso... My "Give One, Get One" OLPC laptop had arrived!

The package is amazingly sparse... No manual, just a single folded sheet of paper (the most important clue is the web site: www.laptop.org/gettingstarted )

Here it is... laptop, power cable, battery.

First hurdle: You have to lift the "rabbit ears" to open the laptop.

Up and running is less than a minute.

I have just begun playing with the bundled applications, and I can say that I am pretty impressed. Many of the applications are obviously still "works in progress", but there's a lot of potential packed into this little green and white package.

A look back at 2007

2007 is drawing to a close, but before you get out the party hats and start practicing the lyrics to Auld Lang Syne, we'd like to take a moment to recap some of the biggest developments in AdSense this year.

New feature launches were abundant in 2007, and many were based on your direct feedback and requests. To help improve the performance of your ads, we revamped the look of our ad formats and introduced ad placements to let you promote your site to potential advertisers. The new Manage Ads feature gave you the ability to make changes to your ad units directly in your account and quickly experiment with optimizations. In addition, we launched such features as video units, AdSense for mobile content, and referrals 2.0 to bring in new revenue streams for your site. Still others like the Allowed Sites list and the recently announced Ad Review Center were inspired by your requests for more control over your ads and your account.

With our growing community of publishers around the world, we also continued our international expansion of products and online resources. AdSense for content was launched in languages such as Hebrew, Greek, and Bulgarian, while AdSense for search became available in a number of Southeast Asian languages. We added payment options such as Western Union Quick Cash in a few countries and EFT in Mexico. To help publishers connect with one another around the world, we introduced AdSense Help Forums in 9 new languages, including Polish, Arabic, and Russian.

And of course, we can't forget to mention the exciting things that happened right here on our blog. We welcomed 6 new languages into the Inside AdSense family (Italian, Korean, Japanese, French, Turkish, and Simplified Chinese), bringing the total number of AdSense blogs to 11. All 11 blogs combined received 2.6 million pageviews from 1.7 million visits, and global Groups subscriptions to all blogs crossed the 43,000 mark.

Finally, we'd like to close with our second annual Reader's Choice Award, which goes to the post you visited most this year: 'Introducing video units'. Accepting the award on behalf of the post is author Ryan Hayward, who had this to say: "In a world where Hollywood writers are striking and my favorite show, 'The Office,' is off-air, I hope that announcing video units helped to fill the creative void and made each of our lives just a little more entertaining. Cue the orchestra."

Here's to a very happy and prosperous 2008. Cheers!

Tips for Decorating Your Baby’s Nursery

The birth of a baby is always an exciting and exhausting time. There is a lot of preparation involved in many ways – from the mother preparing physically and mentally, to the practical side of things, such as ensuring any adjustments are made in the house before baby comes home for the first time.

One of the key things on your to do list if you are expecting a baby is to create a nursery for them to sleep in. This is best done some time before the birth rather than at the last minute, especially if the baby decides to arrive early. You don’t want to be halfway through painting a wall when it’s time to go to the hospital.

Of course it’s not always easy to choose a colour scheme, especially if you don’t know what sex the baby is going to be. If you cannot or do not want to find out beforehand however, there is another alternative: you can choose a more neutral colour for the walls, and then buy accessories in either pink or blue, if desired, once the baby is born.

If budget is a concern, the cheapest way to decorate is by painting the walls rather than wallpapering them. If they are particularly uneven you can sand them down before painting. If you opt for this solution, make sure the work is done well in advance of baby’s arrival, and ensure the room is well ventilated during and after the sanding. Alternatively you could buy lining paper and paint directly onto that, while plain walls can easily be spruced up by using a nursery border. You can then match your accessories to this.

Of course decorating isn’t the only thing you need to think about. Buying essentials to finish the room off is equally important. Baby bedding is available in many designs and colours, so you should be able to find the perfect selection to match the colour scheme you have chosen. If you buy a complete set of matching bedding you will often find you can also buy matching accessories such as lampshades and even soft toys to complete the look of the room.

If you would like a particular set of blue or pink bedding and you don’t know the sex of your baby, the best thing to do is to decide which set you would like and ask a friend or relative if they would go out and buy the appropriate set when the time comes. That way you don’t have to worry about rushing out to buy bedding when the new arrival comes home.

Decorating a nursery can seem like a major job, but with proper thought and planning it doesn’t have to be very difficult. Before you know it you’ll be welcoming your new baby into their freshly decorated nursery.

How To Make Money With Adsense

For most new website publishers, the thought of monetizing a website that is already up and running is very enticing. Google Adsense gives even the most inexperienced internet marketers the chance to make serious money, while enhancing the user experience by providing links to related products, services, and information. For both new and old Adsense publishers, there are several tactics that can be used to increase profit.

The most important factor when trying to make money with Adsense is click-through-rate, or CTR. As your Google Adsense click-through-rate increases, you will generate more revenue, given you are paid for each click on your Adsense ad blocks. To increase click-through-rate, you can use the following ideas to more properly integrate the Adsense ad blocks into your website's pages.

- When creating your Adsense color palette, you are able to modify the colors to fit your website's color scheme. By making the background and border colors the same as your website's background color, making links the same color as the links on your website, and making the text color within your adsense blocks the same as the text color of the rest of your website, your Adsense ads will appear to be part of your content, as opposed to being seen by your users as unrelated advertisements.

- Position your Adsense blocks to be shown on prominent parts of each page. You may use up to three ad blocks, which makes it much more possible to make money with Adsense, especially if each ad is shown above the fold of your website. It is recommended to place some ads within content portions of the page, and others where users are accustomed to seeing navigation links. Remember, clicks are most important here, so make them as easy as possible for your users to get to!

Beyond the improvements that can be made by tweaking your website's design, there are also improvements that can be made to your website's content, which will help increase how much money you make with Google Adsense. For example, by keeping your website's content targeted at one specific topic, the Adsense ads that are shown on your pages will be much more highly targeted, and as a result, more likely to interest your visitors. As you could imagine, the more interested a user is in the topics shown within an Adsense block, the more likely they are to click, and make you money.

Some site owners fail to recognize how their content could be optimized for specific keywords. If your website's content is about the legal services, for example, you will make more money per click than a site whose content is about a less sought after keyword group. By getting suggestions through

Overture or the Adwords keyword suggestion tools, you will be able to see what specific keywords could pay, and also how altering your site's content could affect your website's revenue.

Last-Minute Tax Deductions for Your Online Business

Hurry! You have until the end of the day on December 31 to purchase and pay for items for your eBay or other business and use those expenses as a tax deduction on your 2007 income tax return.

Some qualifying items that you probably need anyway, or will need soon, include items for shipping such as bubble wrap, padded envelopes for mailing, maybe a new postal scaleor even inkfor your printer if you print your own labels. In fact, if you need a new printerfor your business computer, this is the time to make that purchase.

Other tax deductible items that you might not have thought of include books for your eBay education, titles such as The Official eBay Bibleor How to Start and Run an eBay Consignment Business. If the information applies directly to your business, the books are deductible business expenses on your Schedule C.

Do you plan on joining a dropship service such as Doba or Shopster next year? Do it now, pay the fee by the end of the day on Monday, December 31, and that expense will also be deductible on your 2007 taxes. Speaking of fees, go ahead and pay your December eBay fees early; they’re deductible as well.

If you’re dreading gathering your business information in order to be able to complete your tax return, you may need a bookkeeping system like this one and yes, you guessed it, the price is a deductible business expense as well.

If you’re going to need these things anyway in the next few weeks, might as well make your business purchases now to take advantage of the tax deductions. Just be sure the items are paid for before January 1, 2008.

P.S. Disclaimer: This information is believed to be accurate but should not be considered definitive in your situation. Always check with your tax professional to determine the eligibility of items for business deductions.

P.P.S. Don’t like all the work that goes into paying taxes and trying to understand the tax code? You can help get rid of the IRS. Look into this alternative, a truly fair and simple way to pay taxes.

CEASED SERVICES AND TECHNOLOGICAL WARINESS

The introduction and suspension of media services is becoming a regular occurrence and the combined effects of multiple false starts is creating turmoil in the marketplace and making consumers wary of new services.

Let me give some examples. Wal-Mart recently announced it is halting its online video download service after only a year of operation because Hewlett Packard Co. has discontinued its underlying technology due to poor market performance. The New York Times has one of the most successful newspaper websites but has changed its business model several times, most recently abandoning Times Select consumer paid model for an advertising-based model. Sony created a CONNECT Player for its Walkman, PSP, Clie and VAIO that was so plagued by problems that it ended support for the product and advised owners to use another music player and library manager instead. These are only a few of the hundreds of starts and stops of services that have occurred in recent years.

The primary reasons for failures of these types of services have been the rush to get them to market and the unwillingness of companies to financially support services for more than a limited time. These factors lead to insufficient product development efforts before introduction and rapid abandonment of products and services that may need time to be corrected or to mature in the market.

Companies of all kinds introduce and withdraw products for the market on a regular basis, but rapid introduction and withdrawal of media services tends to create more disruption for the consumer. Media services differ from other products that companies decide they will no longer manufacture because ceasing media services reduces functionality of hardware products for which the services were designed. Suspension of services also interferes with the strong habitual uses of media products and services that results from them being experience and lifestyle good and services

Media and communication technologies are changing rapidly but consumer behavior changes much more slowly. Consumers need time to learn about and get used to new technologies. The appearance of consumer technology fatigue from the constant changing and versioning of media and communication technologies is well recognized. Today, the rapid introduction and cessation of services is fueling technology wariness among consumers who have purchased hardware on the assumption that the services sold with it will continued to be offered throughout the useful life of the product.

It is a problem that media and communication companies have created themselves and it is making media markets more turbulent and complex.

MONETIZATION CHALLENGES IN DIGITAL VIDEO MEDIA

The real challenges facing media companies today are not technology or opportunities, but how to monetize activities in digital video media. The popularity of video downloads and streaming video on internet and mobile devices is growing exponentially and motion picture and television production companies are rushing to create deals to participate in the phenomenon.

The biggest challenge is finding workable business models. A combination of technology and capricious consumers are altering existing media business models and making success with new models difficult. The traditional business models of media are eroding as audiences and advertisers respond to changing media markets and today both legacy and new media are struggling to find effective new business models for their existing operations and new products and services.

It is complicated because a fundamental shift in financing media is underway and many companies are finding it difficult to adjust their business perspective. During the period of industrial society consumers made relatively few direct payments for media and business models worldwide were based primarily on advertising expenditures, license fees, and tax payments. In post-industrial society, the rise of new social and economic arrangements and the proliferation of types of media and media content, business models are shifting toward a consumer model. Today, for every dollar spent in the U.S. on media by advertisers, consumers now spend 7 dollars. Media have shifted from a supply driven market to a demand driven market.

This means that companies must spend a good deal of effort ensuring they are creating value for customers. However, it is not enough to create value for customers. At the end of the day, economic value must be created for the company or it is not running a business.

Although media firms are rapidly entering digital video provision, there are significant business problems with contemporary deals involving new forms of digital video media. Companies are not buying return on investment, but are buying market share in hopes that income will follow. The trend is especially evident in social media, where companies are pinning their hopes on Internet advertising growth and increased abilities to better target advertising. It is a big gamble because social media users have been ad averse and click through rates are less than one-tenth of those on other internet sites.

You Tube was purchased by Google for $1.65 billion but has advertising revenues of about $250 million and My Space, which was acquired by News Corp. for $580 million, receives about $450 million in advertising revenue. On the face of those numbers these do not appear to be rationale business investments, but what the firms are actually doing is buying large audiences in hopes of positioning themselves as leaders in online advertising.

They are doing so because Internet advertising expenditures are heavily concentrated and the top 10 sites in the U.S. account for 70 percent of the total advertising expenditures. The high prices for social media are part of a fight for the top because of the ad revenue concentration. The companies are taking a business risk that may or may not pay off depending on the willingness of the users of those social media to accept advertising and monitoring of their activities.

Across digital video media we are now seeing a variety of company strategies. Some firms are pursuing ad-supported free media business models, whereas other firms are taking the road toward conditional access as part of subscriptions to Internet and mobile services. Still others are mixing income streams from both conditional access and advertising. The industry is not yet mature enough and consumer preferences are not yet clear enough to determine which will be the most successful revenue model. As a result, firms need to be agile, flexible, and able to change rapidly in their approach to digital video media.

MLM Training: Don't Sell Your Product, Sell Benefits

Many of us in MLM are very excited about our products and services. It is great to be excited about what we have to offer. However, we need to be careful about our focus. Here is an mlm training tip: always focus on the benefit and not the product itself.

Many times in advertising, we see this when the focus is on the great features and along with detailed descriptions. While sometimes this is necessary when it comes to prospective clients making an informed decision, most times many people simply want to know what is in it for them.

Have you ever heard the saying that you can't see the forest for the trees? This analogy works perfectly here. For example, if you describe in detail how the forest is made up physically and don't tell about and describe how beautiful the entire forest is, you could be missing the folks who want to know more about how serene and gorgeous the forest is.

Let's use another example. Suppose there is someone who is looking for a good landscaper. What they do, the physical aspect of the job, is not really important. They do landscape a yard, but that's not necessarily what you or I am interested in. What you and I are interested in is if they are able to create a beautifully landscaped yard based on what we what we want.

If you and I were shopping for furniture, some of us might be attracted to price while others of us are more interested in the details of the materials used. Other potential customers base their decisions on the look of the furniture.

As you can see from these examples, while people do buy for various reasons, most of the time they are interested in how it benefits them. Overall, whatever your mlm product or service offers, follow this mlm traing tip where you focus solely on benefits, and watch your sales increase.

Fortunes can be made or lost with network marketing. Many of the secrets to profiting with MLM are not written in your company’s training guide. Get the must have training guide at http://mentormonique.bigmlmtruths.com/?mad=9091

AdSense inspiration

A few weeks ago we posted the winner of the AdSense Story Contest, and as promised, here are a few more of the stories and video submissions we received. This one comes from AdSense publisher Amit Agarwal of Agra, India.

Amit is a professional blogger and personal technology columnist for the Financial Express and The Hindustan Times. He maintains a technology blog called Digital Inspiration, which draws readers from all over the globe and covers software reviews, web technologies, and social media. His latest venture, India Inc., carries news and analysis about business and finance. Amit also runs a message board where he personally answers reader questions on blogging, online monetization and software.

In the early days, Amit was only making a few cents on Digital Inspiration. After optimizing the site, however, his revenue went through the roof. Now AdSense helps Amit lead a very comfortable life. Amit says, "I have tried a couple of other advertising programs on my website, but none of them have been so successful as AdSense. That's because AdSense contextual ads are always so relevant to the content."

Amit has also found success with several other AdSense products and features. He currently uses referrals to recommend software to his readers, and has implemented link units to efficiently use space on his site. He also uses the Google Custom Search Engine, linked to his AdSense for search account, and so is able to monetize his search results while helping visitors navigate through his site's pages with greater control. As he notes, "Currently 75% of my site revenue comes through the Google AdSense program. And I get more time to focus on writing new content for my readers rather than hunting for advertisers. AdSense has helped change my life forever."

Free MLM Tip: 3 Fastest Ways To Get Traffic To Any Website

Getting decent traffic to your MLM website which features your opportunity is crucial if you are woking online. Here are three free mlm tips for you to use from expert Jim Edwards.

3 Fastest Ways To Get Traffic To Any Website

by: Jim Edwards

After all the debate over website design, shopping carts and credit card processors, every website owner eventually comes to the startling realization that they need one more thing to survive - website traffic!

Without website traffic it's the same as building an expensive billboard and, instead of placing it alongside a busy highway, hiding it in your *basement* where nobody can see it.

Upon realizing they need traffic, most website owners run out and start blowing chunks of money and time trying to get "hits," but they fail to grasp that there are really only three (3) reliable ways to get traffic to any website.

Method #1 - Buy Traffic Currently, the fastest way to get traffic to any website involves using the little classified ads on the right side of search giant Google's results pages.

Called Google AdWords, the system allows any advertiser to open an account with a $5 activation fee and start seeing their ads appear on Google within about 15 minutes.

Advertisers only pay when visitors actually click through from their ad on Google to their website or affiliate link.

Overture.com also sells traffic by the click, but they make you wait three to five days to go through their editorial review process before allowing ads to appear on their network.

You can also buy advertising on dozens of other pay-per-click search engines.

They all follow the same basic model of only charging advertisers for targeted visitors who read an ad based on a keyword search and decide to click through for more information.

Log on to www.payperclicksearchengines.com for a list of over 600 choices ranked by market penetration.

A word to the wise on pay-per-click advertising: Watch your costs and track and measure everything. Even though you can get traffic for as little as a penny, you should track your results by search engine and by individual keyword if you want maximum success.

Many a company has lost its entire advertising budget paying only a nickel or a dime per click, but not watching their conversion rates and pouring money into keywords that don't convert... while neglecting the keywords that do bring sales (mainly because they don't know which is which!).

Method #2 - Borrow Traffic If you need traffic to a website, then borrow it from people who already have it... especially people with lists of loyal subscribers or traffic from search engines, affiliates, or other steady sources.

"Endorsed Mailings" and "Reciprocal Linking" by other people represent the two fastest ways to borrow someone else's traffic.

If they maintain a list of subscribers, convince them to send an email out to their people telling them why they should check out your site.

Also, negotiate a prominent link on their web pages to siphon off targeted visitors who find their website.

Often the best way to persuade someone to do this involves paying them a commission, agreeing to do a similar mailing, or providing a link to them on your site (or a combination of all three).

Imagine how much traffic you could get if someone with a list of 10,000 loyal subscribers told their people to go look at your website!

Method #3 Recycle Traffic The most economical way to get traffic involves turning one-time visitors into regular, repeat visitors that you direct to multiple sites over time.

You do this by pulling website visitors into your sphere of influence by enticing them to sign up for your newsletter, autoresponder sequence, or "mini-course."

Then you keep in contact with regular articles, special reports, and recommendations enticing them to visit your own and other people's websites.

Ultimately, every website owner should orient all of their marketing efforts towards this end of developing a stream of recycled traffic, because it costs the least and creates the best return on time and money invested.

It doesn't matter if you promote your own product, promote only as an affiliate, or some combination of the two... if you don't recycle traffic and get more than one hit out of each visitor, you're making one of the biggest mistakes anyone can make online.

FUEL YOUR BODY BEFORE YOU SHOP

Tis the season to go shopping,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

That’s right and if you are like me, then the next few days is going to be loaded with lots of fun shopping. Now in order to prepare yourself to get through these next few days of standing in long line ups, sprinting from store to store or fighting other shopping combatants for the last Wii on the shelf, then you are going to need to fuel yourself with the proper nutrition.

Eat a healthy breakfast before you go shopping. This should be one of your largest meals of the day and the most important. Eating a healthy breakfast is crucial for providing the correct fuel to get you going. Your body has been fasting for 6-10 hours from sleeping and is primed for re-fueling.

Researchers have found that people who ate breakfast every day were a third less likely to be obese compared to those who skipped the meal. In addition, they were half as likely to have blood-sugar problems, which increase the risk of developing diabetes or having high cholesterol, which is a known risk factor for heart disease. The researchers believe that eating first thing in the morning may help to stabilize blood sugar levels, which regulate appetite and energy. They suggest people who eat breakfast are less likely to be hungry during the rest of the day and are, therefore, less likely to overeat.

Also take a protein smoothie with you on your shopping spree and walk around sipping on this delicious treat. Using a blender, add 2 cups of milk or water, 1 scoop of protein powder, 1 cup of your favorite fruit and some ice. This smoothie will cure your sweet tooth and keep you busy while passing all of the tempting unhealthy foods.

Remember a pre-shopping meal will help you avoid making the bad choices you may choose if you're very hungry and have a hard time avoiding sweet or salty temptations.

Good Luck on your journey and read more great articles - http://funkroberts.blogspot.com

Britney's Teen Sister Jamie Lynn Spears Pregnant at 16!

06/09/2007

Britney was the sister who continued being in the headlines for her snobbish attitude.. her break up with Kevin, losing custody of her kids, her link ups.. but now its Jamie, Britney's younger sis who has made headlines.. the younger sibling earned column inches of her own when she confirmed she is expecting her first child by long-term boyfriend Casey Aldridge.

Jamie is about three months pregnant."It was a shock for both of us. So unexpected" says the star of American high school TV show Zoey 101, finishing its third season next month as one of Nickelodeon's highest-rated shows.

The couple apparently waited a few weeks before breaking the news to her parents "I needed to work out what I would do for myself before I let any one's opinion affect my decision" says the new mother.A wise decision Jamie...

4/3/2004

I didn't believe it because Jamie Lynn's always been so conscientious" speaks her mother, Lynne Spears. She's never late for her curfew. I was in shock. I mean, this is my 16-year-old baby."

Now what makes me suspect(note the word) that Jamie will be the wiser sister... i guess turning a mother at 16 should do the needful... why don't all celebs turn moms so early! :)

Please dont forget to leave your comments.. you love me.. dont you???:))

How to Get Leads for Your MLM Business: It's a Shame for You Not To Get Leads -- When You Can Do It So Easily

All professional network marketers want to learn how to get leads for their mlm business. As a matter of fact, this can be done pretty easily, and for free. The catch is to stand out from all the mlm competition out there. Here are 5 tips to help you stand out so that folks will come running to you.

Tip #1: You must specialize. Even if you are not doing this now, this must be part of your long-term plan. What you need to do is to pick an area in MLM that you can be better at than anyone else. In our industry, it is easy to get off track and use all kinds of different marketing methods. The problem is you can’t be the expert in everything. If you get spread too thin, you will know a little about lots of things, and be an expert in none. You must narrow your focus, and differentiate yourself from everyone else.

Tip #2: Brand yourself. You specialize in an area by branding yourself. There are many ways you can do this. Here are some examples for you to consider:

-Have your own ebook
-Use video marketing
-Use audios
-Develop your own software
-Host your own conference calls
-Offer specialized training calls for anyone no matter their mlm
-Develop your own free report

As you can see, there are many things you can do to brand yourself. Pick one or two and work to become an expert in that particular niche. You will be amazed at how easy it will be to get free leads for your mlm business when you do this.

Tip #3: Take a look at mlm industry leaders. There are many great leaders in our industry. However, instead of imitating them, do something different. You can become an industry leader simply by focusing on a different technique. For example, maybe in your particular company, none of the leaders are using videos to introduce people to the opportunity. What you can do is to create your own video series about your company and the life changing opportunity it provides. Videos are a great way for people to see you, as well as to learn to like and trust you. In other words, they are a great relationship building tool.

Tip #4: Become a policies and procedures expert. As you are likely well aware, many people in our industry do not take the time to evaluate a company’s policies and procedures before joining the business opportunity. Unfortunately, this can be a very costly mistake. So, you can be a great help to folks if you learn how to evaluate compensation plans and policies and procedures. Learn how to explain to people what a matrix, binary, aussie 2-up, uni-level, etc. plans are to help them make informed decisions. Many people are not getting this type of help. Once again, I think you will be surprised at how many free leads you will be able to get for your mlm business just by helping people. They will want to be on your team.

Tip #5: Brainstorm and pick a niche. If you still are pondering what to specialize in, here are additional ideas:
-Become an expert in personality types
-Become an expert in how to save on taxes with an mlm business
-Become an expert in article writing
-Become an expert in forum marketing
-Become a web 2.0 expert (e.g. how to make the best use of sites such as Myspace, Facebook, Ryze, Direct Matches, etc.).
-Become a blogging expert
-Become a local prospecting expert
-Become a diet club expert

As you can see, there are many things you can do to brand yourself.
Now, I hope you can clearly see how important it is for you to brand yourself in an mlm niche. If you do this, you will be able to generate lots of interest. In addition, you will be able to teach your leaders how to get free leads for their mlm business as well.

Kayak buys Sidestep for $200mm

Hot of the blogsphere care of TechCrunch and days after I pondered if an OTA would buy a meta-search provider we find that Kayak has raised $196mm, from pretty much everyone on Sand Hill Road and used the money to buy Sidestep for around $180mm (plus $20mm in cash reservers at Sidestep equals $200mm). Arrington has the full story here.

Sidestep will lose 55 staff (out of 75) including CEO Rob Solomon (after 60 day transition.

What are the possibilities here:
  • Do they keep two brands?
  • Do they merge the content businesses that each of them built or bought to do SEO?
The biggest question of course - is this a sign of strength in the market with one and two coming together to dominate or a sign of weakness that they need to get together to survive? Deal of the year at the last moment in the year.

UPDATE - Adam Healey over at VibeAgent has crunched some numbers on the deal putting the combined entity (or new Kayak) at a valuation of $450 million or a P/E of 35 (assuming 15% margin on TechCrunch's reporting of combined revenues of $85 million).

UPDATE 2 - Interview here with Kayak's VP Communications Kellie Pelletier about the deal,

WHOOT: Wotif.com secures AOT shares and secures Travel.com.au

WHOOT series update - WHoever Owns Outright Travel.com.au

Wotif.com has lodged what I am sure is their favourite filing of the year in stating that they have jumped to 82.129% of Travel.com.au through an acquisition of AOT's 19% stake. Travelweekly have some good commentary here from AOT CEO Andrew Burnes. Seems he was very interested in securing his distribution through Travel.com.au - though would appear he has made a nice profit as well.

There is now no reason for the remaining shareholders to keep a hold of their shares. Wotif have crossed the magic 75% barrier and this deal is over. Now all Wotif have to do is to figure out what to do with three brands in one market, HQs in two cities, two supplier teams talking to the same people, two CEOs, two maybe three technology platforms and a partridge in a pear tree.

UPDATE - 31 Dec up to 83.313%

UPDATE 2 - Wotif.com has declared its offer "unconditional". This means it does not matter if any other acceptances are made or not. Either way Wotif will purchase all the shares that have accepted the offer. To increase the certainty that this will be as many shares as possible, they have also extended the period for acceptance (for a second time) to 31 January 2008. In checking through the filings came across this great piece of advertising placement on smh.com.au

FINAL UPDATE - deal done! Confirmation that Wotif have 97% of the stock and can compulsorily acquire the rest. The offer formally closed today (1Feb08). TravelWeekly

Airline Industry - Sri Lankan style - give the president a seat or get the hell out of town

There is simple rule when you are in charge of a government owned airline - do whatever the president of the country says or pack your bags. Unfortunately Peter Hill the now CEO of SriLankan Airlines (British National) was caught by this rule. Story from e-tid (registration required) that staff at the airline refused to bump 35 passengers from a it scheduled London to Colombo via Maldives flight to accommodate President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his 35 strong entourage. Rajapaksa was returning from seeing his song graduate from the Royal Naval College (ie not official business). There is clearly a bit of he said, she said behind this story. The Airline says quite simply that the airline was full and no notice was given. The president seemed to channel blues great BB King by saying words to the effect of "by I am paying the cost to be the boss", threw in a little bit of "dont' you know who I am" before ending off with "you'll be sorry come Monday morning" (ok I made that bit up). In the end the Prez had to charter a flight to get home. Come the morning Hill's work permit is revoked forcing him to give up the top job at the airline and presumably leave the country. Hill was appointed to the airline by Emirates (who own 43.63%) so hopefully will be quickly saved from the jobless queue. For standing by his customers despite the utmost pressure that can be applied I have given Peter Hill the inaugural BOOT Airline Customer Care Devotee of the Year award.

UPDATE - 8 Jan 08 Emirates has announced (according to TravelToday) that it will not renew its management contract in March with SriLankan Airlines and sell its stake in the carrier. I would guess the deportation of a key Emirates exec must have been a factor or at least an indication of the state of the relationship between Emirates and the Sri Lankan government (though there is nothing in the story to suggest a link).

Increase Web Traffic With Expired Domain Names

By Luis Galarza - Affiliate Marketing Secret Training Guide Blog

Domain Names Are Money Makers, But If You Want To Skyrock Your Web Traffic By Leveraging The Hard Work And Marketing Investment Of Other Entrepreneurs, Expire Domain Names Is The Way To Go!

Every year there are many entrepreneurs that buy a domain name and build a web site business and spend a lot of time and money marketing the site to bring as much visitors as they can, and then they loose interest or just didn't work for them and they forget about it... and eventually the domain name expired. But, all the effort they put in it still brings traffic to that domain name, which means...

Bingo! A another Internet marketing strategy to increase your web site traffic.

Now what you need to do is catch those expired domain names before some else does (your competition), then just re-direct the traffic to your main web site, or re-build the site with content relevant to your niche market and then link to your main site or to your product and service page.

Then, let that free traffic generate more visitors to your main site and as you know more visitors mean more sales.

Where Can I Get Expired Domain Names

This is very easy, just go to DeletedDomains.com. This site does all the work for you and you get the traffic. Their service is very good and been around for quiet some time. Avoid to go to services that charge you for this service and they may even get the best domains for their own use.

Manage Ads gives you more ad functionality

As we mentioned last week, we're constantly working to improve the new ad management feature. There's another wave of minor tweaks to this feature, inspired by your feedback as always.

Hide and seek
We've heard from more than a few of you that you'd like to see a 'delete' function on the Manage Ads page. To avoid deleting any ad unit that's currently serving impressions on your pages, we've now added a 'hide' function so you can avoid displaying ad units you prefer not to see on your Manage Ads page. Just click the 'Hide' link associated with a specific ad unit in the Actions column, and the ad will no longer appear when you view your Manage Ads page. Don't worry, hiding any active ad unit won't prevent it from generating revenue for you, and you can view your hidden ad units at any time by checking the box that says 'Show hidden AdSense units'.

Channel IDs for all
In addition to AdSense for content, you can now view the custom channel ID numbers associated with other AdSense products (e.g. AdSense for search and referrals). Visit the Channels page under the AdSense Setup tab, and select the tab corresponding to the product you'd like to view.
