P&G - Procter & Gamble - Innovating & Growing with Business Model

Did you know that Procter and Gamble - P&G makes all these cool products below that you use everyday in your house?

You betcha... from Duracell and Gillette to Crest, Charmin to Tide, Bounty to Iams - P&G is the world's largest consumer goods company. As a matter of fact, "three billion times a day, P&G brands touch the lives of people around the world." P&G has a bigger mission that they are trying to fulfill: "Provide branded products and services of superior quality and value that improve the lives of the world's consumers, now and for generations to come."

P&G is one of the Top 20 innovators of the Innovation Index.

P&G stock is doing relatively well compared to the major indexes. Here is a snapshot of how well P&G is holding up since 2007, beating both S&P 500 and Dow Jones indices:

Why is P&G doing so well?

One answer: Innovation. Innovation driving new business, innovation driving growth, innovative leadership by past CEO of P&G A.G. Lafley, & current CEO Bob McDonald. Another fact that most investors may not know about: Barclays Global Investors and Berkshire Hathaway (Warren Buffett's company) are the top two institutional holders of P&G.

P&G has been making or handily beating the earnings estimates for the past 4 quarters (despite the Great Recession):

Earnings HistoryDec-08Mar-09Jun-09Sep-09
EPS Est1.580.800.790.99
EPS Actual1.580.840.801.06
Difference 0.000.040.010.07
Surprise % 0.0% 5.0% 1.3% 7.1%

(Courtesy - Yahoo Finance)

P&G Revenue & Gross Profit are beginning to climb back (check earnings results below), after divesting major businesses such as the prescription business in 2009 (courtesy - Yahoo Finance). Sales fell in 2008-2009 (yearly sales for June 2009) owing to the recession, divesting of businesses, and P&G's ill-timed strategy of raising prices for its products in the midst of the Great Recession that backfired. The price increases initially helped buoy sales, but eventually sales suffered. P&G is correcting the price increase strategy of 2008 beginning in Q3 of 2009.

P&G Global Business Unit Organization

24 of P&G's brands have more than a billion dollars in net annual sales,[15] and another 18 have sales between $500 million and $1 billion. (Courtesy - Wikipedia). These P&G brands are run as business units, with brand heads managing the operations, products & profits.

Billion dollar brands

Global Products A to Z

Most of these brands, including Bounty, Crest, Pringles, Puffs, and Tide, are global products available in several continents. Procter & Gamble products are available in North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

How did P&G do in the latest quarter?

"The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) reported net sales of $19.8 billion for the July - September quarter which exceeded the Company's guidance. Organic sales growth was up two percent versus a guidance range of flat to minus three percent on better than expected results across most business segments. Diluted net earnings per share increased three percent to $1.06, above the Company's guidance range of $0.95 to $1.00. The Company raised its outlook for the October - December quarter and fiscal 2010 organic sales growth citing modestly higher expectation for market growth. The Company also increased the low end of its fiscal year guidance range by $0.03 per share to reflect the higher top-line growth projection." - Courtesy PG.com Quarterly Press Release.

"Our September quarter results give us encouragement we are making the right choices to grow market share profitably," said President and Chief Executive Officer Bob McDonald. "We are investing in innovation, expanding our portfolio and improving consumer value to serve more consumers, in more parts of the world, more completely. We are driving simplification and improving execution while leveraging scale to create cost efficiencies that help fund these investments and accelerate growth."

What is sexy, new and exciting that P&G is innovating?

P&G recently introduced Cascade Complete All-in-1 ActionPacs.

Cascade Complete All-in-1 ActionPacs "give you the confidence of a job done right. It breaks down, dissolves, and rinses away tough food particles without the need to pre-wash."

Here is what one highly satisfied P&G customer had to say about All-in-1 ActionPacs:

OMG this is the most amazing product

"I have an older dishwasher that came with the apartment I live in. You had to completely wash the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. I was basically using it to drain the dishes. I saw this on T.V. and went to walmart and got it. All I can say is it is almost magical the way it cleans. I tested it on several hard to wash dishes, dried oatmeal, dried rice krispy cereal and my stainless steel pots and everything came out clean, no stuck on food, no hard water residue. thank you! thank you! thank you! what a time saver. I am disabled and one of the hardest things to do is standing over the sink washing dishes."

Marketing Machine

According to the Nielsen Company, in 2007 P&G spent more on U.S. advertising than any other company; the $2.62 billion spent by P&G is almost twice as much as that spent by General Motors, the next company on the Nielsen list.[5] P&G was named 2008 Advertiser of the Year by Cannes International Advertising Festival.[6]

Bottomline:

P&G is a great company with great leadership and employees, and highly satisfied customers. P&G will be around for the next 100 years. P&G will continue to grow high single digits even in this economy because of the breadth of its products, creativity and innovation, global market share, and delighted repeat customers who will not buy another brand. When P&G made increases in product prices to bolster revenue & profits - as high as 16 percent because of higher costs for plastic, energy, and paper in 2008 - consumers reacted and bought less of P&G products, and sales fell. P&G changed strategies in Q3 2009 to react to the price-conscious buyers & accommodate frugal shoppers: "Company leaders say they are cutting prices about 10 percent of their global product line, stepping up promotions such as coupons and other discounts, and making more “value” pitches to consumers." P&G also announced a new plan for its laundry business, slashing the price of Cheer detergent by 13 percent and promoting it as a bargain brand. In CEO McDonald's words: "the focus on innovation, expanding our portfolio and improving consumer value" are keys to P&G's continued growth.

Apple launches iPhone 3G S - Speediest, Smartest, Sexiest Smartphone

Apple introduced the latest iPhone 3G S - S for Speed (upto two times faster), S for Shoot (with the video camera and 3.0 megapixel Still camera), S for Smart (with features such as Voice Control for making calls and music, Internet tethering and voice memos), S for Spotlight Search (search across the entire iPhone, contacts, email, calendars, notes and iPod), S for Slim (slimmer than previous iPhone), S for the two "s"es in Compass (a very cool digital compass), S for the "scape" in LandScape mode (a boon for those typing lots of messagaes, mail, notes and Safari, and who are endowed with large fingers), S for Send and SMS (as in send multimedia rich messages with video, audio, pictures, contact information and even forward them), S for Space (even more, twice the diskspace of iPhone 3G), S for Stocks (as in better stock charts and features) and finally, S for Sexy - the sexiest iPhone to date, now available in White as well as Black! iPhone 3G S is The smartphone you have been waiting for... available for only $199 for the 16 GB version.

Bottomline:

The innovations in iPhone 3G S are downright absurd, and will help expand Apple's marketshare further in the growing smartphone market segment. iPhone has been a category killer with innovative features and iPhone apps store, and now with a starting price of only $99 for the base iPhone, Apple will penetrate the market even deeper and faster. Finally, there is an iPhone for every budget. The questions are whether Apple can keep up the margins with such competitive pricing, launch a 4G iPhone in 2009 or 2010, and launch a iPhone Lite for $49 or less. If the economy rebounds in late 2009, Apple iPhone business will have a huge last quarter - traditionally the best quarter in Apple's financial performance. Can iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S stall the new Palm Pre which just got launched and was off to a good start, Google's G1 on the open Android platform, and Nokia's latest smartphone, the N97 that also began shipping. Can LG and Samsung take a crack at the iPhone with their latest forays? Can the iPhone also stall the resurgence of the Blackberry smartphones with the latest addition of Storm Touch? The battle for smartphone marketshare is indeed red hot, in an otherwise gloomy cell phone market worldwide! One thing is certain: consumers and business users are winning with the creativity and innovation packed in these amazing devices. The only thing missing from today's announcement was Steve Jobs infectious introduction.

Expanding Your Business Innovation Capacity

"The sudden awareness of the urgent need for change and looking into the future in a more structured way, made this little sexy word (innovation) very popular, trendsetting and chic. However, how would you define innovation? What makes a company innovative?"

According to Mariana Ferrari Quijano, it is better not to define it (the word innovation), but to accept all it's synonyms: change, alteration, revolution, upheaval, transformation, metamorphosis, breakthrough; new measures, new methods, modernization, novelty, newness; creativity, originality, ingenuity, inspiration, inventiveness, shake up.

Mariana has authored a significant article on innovation, titled Innovation: what's in that little, trendy, sexy word, wherein she examines an innovator's determinant factors to survive and grow in downturns. She believes cash flow and balanced (or lean) costs are the two significant factors that can either make or break a company. Further, she alludes that during such periods, a company's capacity to innovate takes its maximum weight, as it supports and increase in productivity based in the human capital.

Which brings us back to the image that I have shared at the beginning from her article wherein she defines a company's Innovation Capacity.

Innovation Capacity =
Employees' Brain Preferences + Innovative Work Behaviors + Innovation Practices

Mariana has conducted extensive research on each element that will induce large Innovation Capacity - by encouraging employees to be more creative and providing them opportunities to experiment, rewarding innovative work behaviors that result in successes, and implementing real innovation practices that allows you to build an innovation factory.

Mariana postulates that innovation is about looking ahead, projecting the future, identifying future needs and creating solutions for those needs. By doing so, a company leads the future in its sector, leaving competitors behind. In other words, innovation is about creating the future.

A pertinent example provided is of PROCESOi:

"At PROCESOi we consider innovation to be a strategy, to increase a companies' present value, keep it ahead of its competitors and create sustainable growth.

Innovation is a three-phase process:

Phase 1: Spark: innovation surges due to an interest, inquisitiveness or concern about the present situation.

Phase 2: Creation: unrest or problems can lead to brainstorming, and the unleashing of imagination to reach a solution or identify an opportunity that had not previously been apparent.

Phase 3: Implementation: when the solution or opportunity is identified, an investment is made to make it happen with the aim of generating new income."

I commend Mariana and her team for the work she has undertaken, and creating a benchmark for measuring the Innovation Capacity. She even defines an innovator (although earlier she did not want to define innovation): "An innovator is defined, as an individual, who has a global way of thinking, is intuitive, takes risks, is imaginative, and often breaks the rules."

In short, this article by Mariana is a must read for CEOs, Innovators, Entrepreneurs and Leaders, and is sure to provide you key takeaways towards driving innovation in this tough economic environment.

Mariana sums up her article with these lasting words: "innovation is a synonym for Joy and Happiness, and should not be made a "serious business strategy". Joy, because creating, learning, making mistakes is fun, and happiness because achieving far-fetched, almost unbelievable results makes everybody happy. Don't just take my word, ask Steve Jobs."

The Innovation Index Weekly Report

The Innovation Index stayed essentially flat at 73.74 for the week ending December 27, up 11% for the year from 66.36 (click to see the complete Index)

The Innovation Index began the month of December at 74.70, and is now at 73.74, or down about 1% for the month.

Weekly Advances

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), Hewlett Packard (NYSE: HPQ), IBM (NYSE: IBM), and Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) each gained 1% for the week. HPQ is up 46% for the year, while IBM is on a late rally in December and is now up 20% for the year. HPQ is having an outstanding year in 2006 on the heels of many innovations driving growth. IBM is also coming on strong with solid revenue growth and margins growth for the year. GOOG is up 8% for the year and is poised to return to double-digit growth in 2007 based on their innovation pipeline. WMT is in the black now, up 1% for the year. AMZN is still down 15% for the year, however is recovering from the lows. AMZN is poised to rebound in 2007.

Weekly Declines

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), Dell (NASDAQ: DELL), eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY), Intel (NYSE: INTC), Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM), Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX), and Target (NYSE: TGT) declined last week. RIMM led the declines with 4% for the week. RIMM has been oscillating the last three weeks between +6% and -6%. RIMM posted excellent quarterly results last week; however, investors are wary of the overall stock appreciation for the year. AAPL also went down 4% last week. AAPL is now down 11% in December, however up 9% for the year. EBAY shed 3% last week, and is now down a whopping 31% for the year. Can EBAY rebound next year? TGT dropped 1% last week, although is up 6% for the year. TGT is bound to benefit from the holiday shopping, and will provide a great start to the New Year. Couple of bell weathers INTC and DELL each lost 1% last week; INTC is down 20% and DELL down 17% for the year. What innovations did INTC and DELL introduce in 2006 that will impact their 2007 growth and lead a rebound?

Weekly Neutrals

3M (NYSE: MMM), Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO), GE (NYSE: GE), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), P&G (NYSE: PG), Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) were even for the week. CSCO is on a roll in 2006, up 56% for the year. What important innovations have driven CSCO in the driver's seat again in 2006? Is CSCO gaining market share? GE, MSFT and PG are each showing double-digit percentage growth in stock price for the year.

Yearly Leaders and Laggards

Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM), Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) and Hewlett Packard (NYSE: HPQ) are the top three performers on the Innovation Index for the year gaining 94%, 56% and 46% respectively. eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY), Intel (NYSE: INTC) and Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) are the bottom three performers on the Innovation Index for the year losing 31%, 20% and 17% respectively. AMZN has moved upward from the bottom three performers due to the slight rally in December.

I released story on Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) brewing new innovations last week. The story is included below under References section. SBUX is now up 16% for the year. SBUX has had an impressive growth in the last five years, and when the engine is firing on all cylinders, there is no stopping for SBUX in 2007. Expect another 10% or higher growth for SBUX in 2007.

The Innovation Index is poised to end the year with gains around 11% to 12%. This would equal the stock performance of S & P 500 for the year. The Innovation Index is poised to beat the NASDAQ. However, Dow Jones Index appears to hold its lead over the Innovation Index for the year.

The Innovation Index Yearly Report

I am planning to post an annual report of the top 18 Innovators of The Innovation Index during the second week of January, 2007. The report will include insights gained from the top 18 Innovators, top Innovations introduced during 2006, lessons learned, 2007 projections, and observations on Disruptors challenging the top 18 Innovators.
