How to achieve high quality calls via skype

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of faceVsion Technology USA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Do you use Skype to chat from the internet? If you do use it then you are sure to have experienced mind boggling call disconnections during your chats, just like me. There were several incidences when my family at the other end of our chat sessions seemed frustrated while chatting with me. There were times when my husband couldn't get through to his clients, and sometimes even missed out on important deals due to disturbances during calls. But, now i guess we will be experiencing less or no more interruption during calls or chats with this innovative new technology by faceVsion.

If your're a Skype user, i bet their low quality video calls are a lot more aggravating. Don't you also think so? In this case, Skypes certified VideoCam, FV touchcam N1 from faceVsion can provide its users with a high quality calling experience. Something every user craves for. It will help users connect themselves to their business partners or families from anywhere at anytime, unlike most other so called high definition webcams like Microsoft Cinema and Logitech Pro 9000 which cannot stream true HD over internet. The key to true HD quality video calls is a chip set built into the Touchcam N1 and dual microphones supporting beamforming techniques which offer excellent video and audio experiences to help enhance business partnerships or family relationships across the globe.

FV ExpressCombo includes the FV TouchCam™ L1, the iF award-winning VideoCam that features wide angle High Definition images at 30 frames per second for superb, crystal clear video calls over the internet.

You can check out the products from the faceVision on line store.

Real Men Pray The Rosary - An Apostolate

I found out about a newer apostolate out there, that is RIGHT up our alley here at Defend Us In Battle! The group is called:

The following is from their website:
Welcome to Real Men Pray The Rosary™, a non-profit apostolate that we created not only to promote the blessings of praying the Rosary, but to also foster a community dedicated to ALL REAL MEN AND WOMEN (and their families!) who embrace their Christian devotion, especially Catholic Christians, and walk humbly with God.

The Holy Spirit called upon us to start this apostolate, to create a place where people could study the mysteries / history of the Rosary, read and share experiences of how the Rosary can impact people’s lives in a modern world, and serve as a unifying experience for communities and families alike.

This website will hopefully help us to dispel the notion that praying the Rosary is for ‘old ladies and funerals!’ and only for Catholics.

All Christians can benefit from the recitation of the Rosary.
I really like their logo, and some of the Gear they have. I don't know why, but I am a sucker for logos and outward displays of the faith. These folks also have a podcast, and somewhat of a blog. They are worth the check-out, if for no other reason than the gear they sell. It appears all the proceeds go to charity, so that only adds to this groups efforts.

Apostolates like this one are an important feature of our faith, I post about them when I find them because I think they add to the fullness of the faith. Not only that, but you never know when and how God is going to reach someone, and as long as a group is authentically Catholic, I want to support them.

You can check them out on their website, or follow them:

Wondering Wednesdays - (Vol. III)

Wondering Wednesdays
---=1=---
This may seem odd, but I was talking with someone at work today, and I wonder what I am going to be when I grow up. We were talking about law school, and how I ended up there, and how she had thought about going, but she never wanted to be an attorney (likewise for me) when she originally thought about going to law school. We then started talking about what we REALLY wanted to be doing... and neither of us were sure...? I guess I should figure that out, since my current position ends in a few, well weeks really, and I still don't have any solid future plans. So please keep that in your prayers, I have been praying a lot lately, but really don't seem to be doing it right :) Just kidding - I have pretty much at this point stopped stressing, and have decided to hand it over to God. I'll do my part, and won't question Him on His part.

---=2=---
I wonder if you can LEARN to be a good parent. I know a lot of it has to do with YOUR own parents, and the models you saw growing up, but I wonder if you can adjust that, or in some unfortunate cases fix that. I am blessed to have had two amazing parents, so I am hopefully starting out with that advantage, yet I am still concerned that you just get passed down the basics, and the real serious parenting situations are thrust upon you and you have to decide on your own. Can you learn those skills? I mean, most of the parents I know are GOOD, and I am not worried about MEASURING myself against others, I am more worried about measuring myself against GOD and myself. Is there a way to hone these skills? I mean aside from reading 50 books, and trying to distill what is important to you, from amidst all the psycho-babble, is there a way to do it more naturally?

---=3=---
And on a completely mundane note, I wonder how some people get so many blog readers and twitter followers. This isn't a vanity or envy thought, it is a pure technical question. It just seems as if some users, who tweet the most inane stuff, and dont blog all that much or well have HOARDS of followers. I honestly am not trying to mimic them, I just don't get it. I understand how some folks do have so many, it just strikes me as odd that certain Twitterers and Bloggers, have more than they SEEM they should have.

---=4=---
Why have modern Catholic Churches become so dull, drab, and boring? We talk about beautiful churches on here from time to time, and I posted about an article describing how to IMPROVE THE SACRED SPACE in your church the other day, and so I got to thinking: "Why did this trend start?" I know it was in the 60's and 70's, but it isn't as if we went from cruciform churches to a whole bunch of random church designs. Sure you have your outlier crazy church designs here and there that just don't fit into any semblance of a "form" but a good majority of the more modern Churches all look similar. I am not asking "Why the churches changed to MODERN STYLE" I am asking why the PARTICULAR style they seem to be built in. You know what I am talking about; the spread out, auditorium style. where the side "wings" of pews curve in a little, or completely. The Sanctuary that JUTS out into the congregation a bit. The Sanctuary is more open, than it is a separate and distinct area. The almost white, with hints of grey walls, with the BEAMS that aren't exposed, but aren't hidden that are painted the same colors as the walls. The clear glass windows to let lots of "natural light" in. THE LONG lines on the interior to make it seem BIGGER, when in reality all it does is expose more CEILING and white-grey painted space. How did we get from one to the other? I know cost is an issue, but it isn't even about cost, it is about design. I wish I knew more about MODERN church architecture and the whys and hows. For instance, when a new church is to be built, who secures the architect? Who approves the design? Who has input? Do you go to a CHURCH builder? Shouldn't they be Catholic? I think you get the point. I need answers though :)

---=5=---
As a follow-up: Why isn't there a Vatican "body" that focuses on art and architecture? Why isn't there some governing arm that approves new church designs, art, etc... I am not talking the fine details, I am talking the BIG picture. The approval of new churches, the approval of certain art/sculpture dealers. We have an imprimatur for books, why not liturgical art and design? The more minute stuff, and day to day could be run at the Metropolitan level. Maybe there is, and I just don't know it? If there isn't there should be... and maybe this is a sin, I don't know, but I almost get embarrassed when I go into my church or a few others around here. Again, I am not expecting Cathedrals, I am just expecting some EFFORT. Churches spend TONS of money on other stuff, but we can't spend enough on paint to make the Church visually speak to our eyes in a way that distinctly expresses our worship of God? Maybe my priorities are off... I don't know.

The Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ - July 1

Some friends on a "social networking" site have decided to do another "topic" for posting on our blogs. This one is on:

"The Most Precious Blood of Jesus.

Blood of Jesus, Precious Blood,
Praise to Thee for all Thou art;
Fount of grace, the Godhead's shrine,
Source of glory, Blood Divine.
Blood that angel hosts adore,
Would that men would love Thee more,
Blood of Jesus, Sacred Blood,
Praise and thanks for all Thou art,
Home where all find peace and rest,
Be Thou known and loved and blest!

July 1st is the "Feast of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ" in the usus antiquior. This means that if you were to go to a Mass in the  Extraordinary Form on July 1st, the Mass would be a Double First Class Feast and the priest would most likely be wearing RED Vestments, according to the Missale Romanum (Roman Missal) of 1962. What is somewhat ironic is the fact that the faithful do not actually receive the Blood of Christ, physically, at Masses celebrated in the usus antiquior. (Generally)

When the Missale Romanum was re-issued following the changes instituted by Vatican II (1960's & 1970's) , the reception of Communion, sub utraque specie (under both species) became standard practice. Interestingly enough, in the new Missal and Calendar, the feast of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ was no longer present, and therefore omitted as a Feast.

So the question becomes, Why have we removed the importance of the Precious Blood from our "collective conscience" and yet, place an importance on the Precious Blood in a physical way? Are the two mutually exclusive? Is the answer not that, the Precious Blood should be viewed as the symbol and physical presence of the debt paid by Christ for our sins? We have benefited so much from the Blood that Christ shed, that little else that is present to us on earth gives us so much freedom and grace.

The Blood of Christ is the saving life-source our redemption. It was shed out of NECESSITY, and as It flowed with the water from the side of Christ, our physiological needs were met as well as our Spiritual needs. Just as we need both water and blood internally, in a physiological sense, to survive, we likewise need the Water of Baptism and the Precious Blood of Christ, in a Spiritual Sense, to survive in eternal life with Him in Heaven.

As Father Faber, author of Precious Blood, once wrote:
There is not a corner of God's creation, which is not more or less benefited by the Precious Blood.
The Introit of the Mass of the Feast of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ says:
Redemísti nos, Dómine, in sánguine tuo, ex omni tribu, et lingua, et pópulo, et natióne: et fecísti nos Deo nostro regnum. Ps. lxxxviii. 2. Misericórdias Dómini in aetérnum cantábo: in generatiónem et generatiónem annuntiábo veritátem tuam in ore meo. v. Glória Patri.

Thou hast redeemed us, O Lord, in Thy blood, out of every tribe and tongue, and people and nation, and hast made us to our God a kingdom. Ps. The mercies of the Lord I will sing for ever: I will show forth Thy truth with my mouth to generation and generation. v. Glory be.
Therefore, let us be mindful of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us show proper respect for It at Mass. If we receive, let us receive reverently, as we do the Bodily Eucharist of Christ. If we choose not to receive sub utraque specie let us still make some reverent sign of Adoration when we pass before It. For by His Most Precious Blood, He purchased for us everlasting life, because It takes away the sins of the world. It is therefore worthy to be praised and worshiped.

***UPDATE***:
For clarification purposes... and because of a comment from Mindyleigh, I have decided to post some relevant GIRM and Norms paragraphs for reference, regarding Communion under both species,
sub utraque specie:

Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion Under Both Kinds in the Dioceses of the United States of America:
(Source: USCCB)

11. Since, however, by reason of the sign value, sharing in both eucharistic species reflects more fully the sacred realities that the Liturgy signifies, the Church in her wisdom has made provisions in recent years so that more frequent eucharistic participation from both the sacred host and the chalice of salvation might be made possible for the laity in the Latin Church.

17. From the first days of the Church's celebration of the Eucharist, Holy Communion consisted of the reception of both species in fulfillment of the Lord's command to "take and eat . . . take and drink." The distribution of Holy Communion to the faithful under both kinds was thus the norm for more than a millennium of Catholic liturgical practice.

18. The practice of Holy Communion under both kinds at Mass continued until the late eleventh century, when the custom of distributing the Eucharist to the faithful under the form of bread alone began to grow. By the twelfth century theologians such as Peter Cantor speak of Communion under one kind as a "custom" of the Church. This practice spread until the Council of Constance in 1415 decreed that Holy Communion under the form of bread alone would be distributed to the faithful.

20. The Council's decision to restore Holy Communion under both kinds at the bishop's discretion took expression in the first edition of the Missale Romanum and enjoys an even more generous application in the third typical edition of the Missale Romanum:
Holy Communion has a more complete form as a sign when it is received under both kinds. For in this manner of reception a fuller sign of the Eucharistic banquet shines forth. Moreover there is a clearer expression of that will by which the new and everlasting covenant is ratified in the blood of the Lord and of the relationship of the Eucharistic banquet to the eschatological banquet in the Father's kingdom.

The General Instruction further states that "at the same time the faithful should be guided toward a desire to take part more intensely in a sacred rite in which the sign of the Eucharistic meal stands out more explicitly."

21. The extension of the faculty for the distribution of Holy Communion under both kinds does not represent a change in the Church's immemorial beliefs concerning the Holy Eucharist. Rather, today the Church finds it salutary to restore a practice, when appropriate, that for various reasons was not opportune when the Council of Trent was convened in 1545. But with the passing of time, and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the reform of the Second Vatican Council has resulted in the restoration of a practice by which the faithful are again able to experience "a fuller sign of the Eucharistic banquet."

24. The General Instruction then indicates that:
the diocesan Bishop may lay down norms for the distribution of Communion under both kinds for his own diocese, which must be observed. . . . The diocesan Bishop also has the faculty to allow Communion under both kinds, whenever it seems appropriate to the priest to whom charge of a given community has been entrusted as [its] own pastor, provided that the faithful have been well instructed and there is no danger of the profanation of the Sacrament or that the rite would be difficult to carry out on account of the number of participants or for some other reason.
General Instruction of the Roman Missal
(Source: Chapter 4)

Communion under Both Kinds

281. Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it is distributed under both kinds. For in this form the sign of the eucharistic banquet is more clearly evident and clear expression is given to the divine will by which the new and eternal Covenant is ratified in the Blood of the Lord, as also the relationship between the Eucharistic banquet and the eschatological banquet in the Father's Kingdom.

282. Sacred pastors should take care to ensure that the faithful who participate in the rite or are present at it are as fully aware as possible of the Catholic teaching on the form of Holy Communion as set forth by the Ecumenical Council of Trent. Above all, they should instruct the Christian faithful that the Catholic faith teaches that Christ, whole and entire, and the true Sacrament, is received even under only one species, and consequently that as far as the effects are concerned, those who receive under only one species are not deprived of any of the grace that is necessary for salvation.

They are to teach, furthermore, that the Church, in her stewardship of the Sacraments, has the power to set forth or alter whatever provisions, apart from the substance of the Sacraments, that she judges to be most conducive to the veneration of the Sacraments and the well-being of the recipients, in view of changing conditions, times, and places. At the same time, the faithful should be encouraged to seek to participate more eagerly in this sacred rite, by which the sign of the Eucharistic banquet is made more fully evident.

283. In addition to those cases given in the ritual books, Communion under both kinds is permitted for
  1. Priests who are not able to celebrate or concelebrate Mass;
  2. The deacon and others who perform some duty at the Mass;
  3. Members of communities at the conventual Mass or "community" Mass, along with seminarians, and all who are engaged in a retreat or are taking part in a spiritual or pastoral gathering.
The Diocesan Bishop may establish norms for Communion under both kinds for his own diocese, which are also to be observed in churches of religious and at celebrations with small groups. The Diocesan Bishop is also given the faculty to permit Communion under both kinds whenever it may seem appropriate to the priest to whom, as its own shepherd, a community has been entrusted, provided that the faithful have been well instructed and there is no danger of profanation of the Sacrament or of the rite's becoming difficult because of the large number of participants or some other reason.

In all that pertains to Communion under both kinds, the Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion under Both Kinds in the Dioceses of the United States of America are to be followed (see nos. 27-54).

284. When Communion is distributed under both kinds,
The chalice is usually administered by a deacon or, when no deacon is present, by a priest, or even by a duly instituted acolyte or another extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, or by a member of the faithful who in case of necessity has been entrusted with this duty for a single occasion;

Whatever may remain of the Blood of Christ is consumed at the altar by the priest or the deacon or the duly instituted acolyte who ministered the chalice. The same then purifies, wipes, and arranges the sacred vessels in the usual way.
Any of the faithful who wish to receive Holy Communion under the species of bread alone should be granted their wish.
285. For Communion under both kinds the following should be prepared:
If Communion from the chalice is carried out by communicants' drinking directly from the chalice, a chalice of a sufficiently large size or several chalices are prepared. Care should, however, be taken in planning lest beyond what is needed of the Blood of Christ remains to be consumed at the end of the celebration.

If Communion is carried out by intinction, the hosts should be neither too thin nor too small, but rather a little thicker than usual, so that after being dipped partly into the Blood of Christ they can still easily be distributed to each communicant.
286. If Communion of the Blood of Christ is carried out by communicants' drinking from the chalice, each communicant, after receiving the Body of Christ, moves and stands facing the minister of the chalice. The minister says, Sanguis Christi (The Blood of Christ), the communicant responds, Amen, and the minister hands over the chalice, which the communicant raises to his or her mouth. Each communicant drinks a little from the chalice, hands it back to the minister, and then withdraws; the minister wipes the rim of the chalice with the purificator.
287. If Communion from the chalice is carried out by intinction, each communicant, holding a communion-plate under the chin, approaches the priest, who holds a vessel with the sacred particles, a minister standing at his side and holding the chalice. The priest takes a host, dips it partly into the chalice and, showing it, says, Corpus et Sanguis Christi (The Body and Blood of Christ). The communicant responds, Amen, receives the Sacrament in the mouth from the priest, and then withdraws.

WHY BODYWEIGHT MOVEMENTS ARE SO EFFECTIVE?

If you go to the gym and lift traditional weights they tend to isolate muscles with the intention of bulking the muscle up. This may create "pretty" muscles, but the functional strength and lean muscle you get from bodyweight exercises is more powerful and healthy.

These exercises work your entire body and strengthen it from the core. When you workout you engage all the organs, the glands and the muscles.

Here are 5 reasons to make sure you include bodyweight workouts into your training

1. Very effective at developing a firm, lean, sexy body

2. They are the most convenient form of exercises and can be performed anywhere

3. In life, we use our body as one full body segment, like sitting down, reaching for something on a shelf, turning around, chasing your kids, or any of the hundreds of other movements

4. Your body should be trained mimicking these movements to be best cope with the demands of daily living and sport

5. Machines at gyms can make you stronger, but they are too isolating

Good Luck with today’s work out and GET IT DONE!

HOW TO HAVE A HEALTHY SUMMER BBQ SEASON

SUMMER BBQ LUV

By Laura Discepola, RNCP/ROHP

With the hot weather in full effect what better time than to learn some healthy BBQ techniques to stay on track and maintain your healthy weight this summer?

Grilling is easy, healthy and oh so delicious! However, be rest assured that is not limited to hot dogs, half pound burgers, juicy and fatty steak, beer canned chicken or sticky sweet and sour ribs. Although the aforementioned sound mouth-wateringly delicious, overconsumption of these higher fat BBQ staples may wreck havoc on your health goals and your waist line.

Did you know you can grill vegetables, fish, breads, pizza and even fruit? Yes, that’s right and with your BBQ heated and ready for some flavour, here are some great ideas for you to try in a healthier way:

1. Try replacing hot dogs for homemade kofta (ground meat skewers) and if you’d like, place them in a multigrain bun. Try my Ground Lamb Kofta recipe:

Recipe:
3.5 oz. extra lean ground lamb (ask your butcher for extra lean)
1/2 tsp each, ground cumin, ginger, garlic
A pinch of cinnamon
1 tbsp fresh mint, chopped
¼ tsp sumac (optional)
2 tbsp finely chopped onion

Instructions:

Mix together and form 2 meatballs. Place each meatball on a long wooden skewer and spread along the length of the skewer to make a sausage-shape. Grill until cooked and serve over a tossed green salad or your vegetables of choice.

2. Instead of store bought pre-packaged burgers with 25 + grams of fat each, try making homemade beef burgers with extra lean ground beef. Keep it moist by adding egg whites and extra herbs and spices. Try combining extra lean ground beef and lamb (1/4 lamb, 3/4 beef), fresh rosemary, thyme and garlic to make a mouth-watering burger and better yet, top it off with some low fat goat cheese and grilled onions.

3. If you love condiments, stick to natural ketchup, assorted mustards, relish, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles. Avoid mayonnaises, high-fat cheeses, and rich creamy sauces. If you want to spread some spice try using a fat-free yogurt or sour cream and add some fresh garlic, herbs, spices and hot peppers, your taste buds will thank you for it!

4. For extra flavour, try marinating or adding a dry rub to your chicken breasts, shrimp or lean beef. There are many different flavours and seasonings to try from: lemon-garlic shrimp, jerk chicken, soy-lime ginger beef, etc…

5. Choose lean cuts of meat. For beef, go with beef tenderloin, striploin or sirloin and don’t forget to remove all visible fat. For chicken, go with the breast (feel free to BBQ with the skin on but then take it off and discard before consumption).

6. Grill your veggies! Try bell peppers (red, green yellow and orange), eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, red onions, asparagus and cherry tomatoes to name a few. You can even grill small potatoes and sweet potatoes but before you do, it would be best to pre-cook them slightly. Before hitting the grill, be sure to toss the lightly in some extra-virgin olive oil or use a basting brush so they don’t stock to the grill.

7. For dessert, try grilling pineapple, mango, peach halves, nectarines and even bananas and drizzle your fruit with some fresh orange or lime juice and fresh chopped mint.

8. Quench your thirst with some low-sodium soda water as your base and add some of the following and get creative: add a slash of pineapple juice, add fresh berries and lemon juice, cucumber and even melon. You won’t believe how refreshing these drinks can be! If you fancy wine, think moderation and make a wine spritzer using half wine, half soda water and ice!

9. Don’t forget to serve these BBQ delicacies with some fresh, crisp summer side salads. Try tossing assorted leafy greens (mesclun, Boston Bibb, spinach, arugula, Romaine, etc) and add d toss in a citrus vinaigrette. Make a creamy coleslaw using fat free plain yogurt and your favourite herbs. Try a fresh tomato and basil salad with aged balsamic vinegar, or change things up a little and make a sweet potato salad with fresh chives, rice wine vinegar and add a hint of honey for sweetness!

With a little creativity and a BBQ heated and ready to be used, you can enjoy your summer, outdoors with your friends and keep your healthy eating on track with the above mentioned guideline, tips and tricks! Bon Appétit and happy Barbeque season.

Thanks to Anna Chapman, there goes that idea...

I went to law school with the idea/plan of possibly working in some of federal law enforcement position. In my mind that meant the FBI or CIA, they were the "ultimate dream." Since graduation, I have come to grips with some facts, mainly that I did not go to a Top Tier (ie Ive League) college or law school...and  I really don't have any unique skills. No foreign language, no amazing physical attributes, and definitely no "inside connections." I realize that my "goals" have transformed into more of a "dream" or even "fantasy," meaning... it isn't going to happen! Yet I still held on to a faint glimmer of hope, that I would be sitting in my office one day, receive a package from some random guy in a non-descript delivery uniform, containing a "secured phone." It would ring, and I would be thrust into the world of international espionage...

Well there goes that idea...

After today, I think the nails have hit the coffin. With the arrest of 10 "spies" this week from Russia, the whole espionage world has been throw into the limelight. That being said, one of the more "glamorous" aspects of it... made famous by James Bond has been brought front and center in a sensationalized way:

Add to her sultry-new york socialite-james bond spy looks a twist of a Russian accent, and there is NO WAY my wife is going to let me become a spy...

Even if she DID allow me to do it, under the aforementioned scenario, the position would last about one day due to the first conversation we would have about my job at dinner: [What I ACTUALLY would say is in Blue, What my wife would HEAR in her mind is in RED]
Wife: "What did you do today?"
Me: "Oh, not much, the usual, had lunch with a lady at work. Tried to trick her into divulging where the next transfer of information is going to happen." [Had a nice little date at a restaurant that I would never take you to, where I gazed into her communist eyes adoringly.]
Wife: "Oh that's nice, who is she?"
Me: "Just some mean ole' Russian Spy-Lady." [Just some beautiful Russian model turned spy.]
Wife: "Does she have a sultry Russian accent?"
Me: "uh...no?" [Of course she has a Russian accent, she is Russian, and Tchaikovsky plays in the background while she speaks.]
Wife: "Riiight.... is she pretty?"
Me: "She isn't un-attractive, but they INTENTIONALLY pick beautiful women for these jobs." [She is gorgeous, why do you think I took this job, it is actually listed as a BENEFIT on the job description.]
Wife: "What did you talk about?"
Me: "Guns, Missiles, and Jets?" [Guns, Missiles, and Jets - oh and then we had ice cream because she said she needed to gain a few pounds to help her fit into her new Prada baithing suit.]
Wife: "You are quitting."
...so I guess it is back to the drawing board.

Maybe this can be a bargaining chip to let me go get a Canon Law Degree?

5 Ways Your Parish Can Improve Its Sacred Space

Matt over at Shrine of the Holy Whapping has posted a "How-To" instructional on 5 easy ways (concepts) that any parish can follow to improve their Sacred Space. All of his advice is practical and can be implemented easily and best of all, over time. In other words, his advice takes into account the fact that most parishes don't have millions of dollars to renovate their parish "Extreme Home Makeover Style" and therefore his advice comes in a form that can be implemented at most parishes.

Why "Improve" your Sacred Space? Well unless you are fortunate enough to go to a BEAUTIFUL parish already, then you probably go to a church that in the last 40 years has undergone either renovation or is newly built in the modern-auditorium style. Lately, the faithful have been clamoring for a more Sacred and reverent place for God.

His post is worth reading, and is a very straightforward piece. I suggest that folks print out the post and send it in, or take it in to their local pastoral council, or Pastor. But remember, if you want change, you will have to get your hands dirty, so be willing to either do the work or write a check.

His post is here:

(Church: after simple changes)

Here is the quick list (with my commentary):
  1. Rearrange Furniture:
    • This is the easiest to do.  The point is to be intentional about what you do and liturgically sound. Most Sanctuaries are "random" at best. His advice is small changes to make the Sanctuary more focused on the important things: (for those keeping score at home) The Altar and the Tabernacle. Bringing the Tabernacle "in-line" with the Altar and the Crucifix is an easy start. The Sanctuary should be "useable" in the sense that people walk around in it throughout Mass, and do so in a pretty set pattern. The Altar, Tabernacle, Priests chairs, and altar servers seating should be placed in logical areas and directions.
  2. Consider a New-Color Scheme:
    • This is a simple change. Add some color and texture to the walls. The posters main point here is, because many parishes have white or grey walls running throughout the church, they have a very institutional and cold feeling. Whitewashed walls aren't very visually appealing. They also don't draw people to the Sacred. Use patterns, textures, and break-up for areas of large uninterrupted color.
  3. Add New Paraments and Hangings:
    • This is dangerous advice to give to churches, especially with the fondness for FELT that has be acquired in the last few decades. His point is to use hangings in a way that create a new visual look to the church at a low cost, and in some cases to cover other "problems." We aren't talking "liturgical" colors here necessarily; instead we are taking more semi-permanent hangings, therefore he suggests that colors should be used that are more harmonious to the overall look and feel in the church.
  4. Put In a New Floor
    • This is probably the most "expensive" piece of advice. Carpet is bad. It kills sound, it looks "domestic" and the pattern looks outdated the day that it is new. Not to mention the fact that it gets dirty, and for health reasons should be cleaned way more often than it is. I know in Alaska, carpet is used because there is this thought that it is "safe" in terms of slipping. (Because of all the snow and ice.) Yet, this doesn't have to be done, lock, stock and barrel. Start with the Sanctuary. Use "various" flooring in different parts. The main aisle, near or around statues, etc. The point is you are trying to make the church look more Sacred.
  5. Re-Organize Well-Meaning Clutter
    • More is not More, and Less isn't always More. The advice here is: taking things away can make things look bland and bare, while adding things, such as statues, to bare areas might just look cluttered. The point is to use a logical relationship between art and structure to create a look and "feel" of Sacred space.
Finally, he gives on last over-arching piece of advice:
Work with what you have, and don't work against it. You may not be able to turn your 1950s A-frame church into Chartres, but if you try to find art that harmonizes with its perhaps now rather quaint attempts at futurism, while at the same time seeking to reconnect it with tradition, the result may have a pleasing consistency to it. Simply dropping garish plaster statuary in a dull modern church results in a museum diorama of the history of American Catholic bad taste. Try instead to find common ground, while at the same time ennobling it in some fashion. Many of the examples of the "other modern" we have showcased on this website may give you ideas. While it may lack the grandeur of Rome or Florence, it can still become a beautiful, unified expression of the Faith.
My advice is to re-evaluate your parish every 3-5 years. This doesn't mean make BIG changes every 3-5 years, it just means re-evaluate. Think about how often you re-decorate your home. I don't mean new furniture and new carpet, I just mean a re-evaluation, and yes buying a new home counts. I would say most folks do it more frequently than 3-5 years. So, why wouldn't we do the same with our parish? Again, the point isn't to stay "modern" or in "fashion" it is to ensure that the space, the church, is Sacred. Little things help and can move toward the Sacred.

Lastly, change is hard for people to accept. My advice is the more regularly you change, add, or remove small things the more comfortable people will get with the idea. This doesn't mean to change for change's sake, it just means that there is no time like the present. Also, Catechesis on the "WHY" of the change is very important. It will explain to people WHY the change is being made, and settle in their hearts a bit the change. Again, change is difficult for many to accept, unless of course the change is POSITIVE and DESIRED. If you explain that the DESIRE comes from GOD, and the POSITIVE is that the new "look" creates a more Sacred and Worship-Worthy space, people will be much more likely to be on board. Remember, you can't please everyone... but we are only looking to please one person here: God.

MusicMonday - ♫ Shania Twain - From this moment on ♫

I love the song sung by country singer Shania Twain, who has also given us a number of hits during the 90's. This song could fit in as a perfect wedding song by the lyrics which go on... "From this moment life has begun... from this moment you are the one... right beside you is where I belong". The video is simple yet beautiful with powerful music and lyrics which give the feeling of someone giving heart and soul away in love. Really romantic... Enjoy the vid and have a happy MM :)

I just swear
That I'll aways be there
I give anything
And everything
And I will always care
Through weakness and strength
Happiness and sorrow
For better, for worse
I will love you
With every beat of my heart

From this moment life has begun
From this moment you are the one
Right beside you is where I belong
From this moment on

From this moment, I have been blessed
I live only, for your happiness
And for your love, I give my last breath
From this moment on

I give my hand to you with all my heart
I can't wait to live my life with you I can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you

From this moment, as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing, I wouldn't give
From this moment on

You're the reason I believe in love
And you're the answer to my prayers from up above
All we need is just the two of us
My dreams came true because of you

From this moment, as long as I live
I will love you, I promise you this
There is nothing, I wouldn't give
From this moment, I will love you
As long as I live from this moment on

A Little Way

My wife is amazing... and her faith is so unique and strong, that it surprises me all the time.  She is a self-professed "Cradle Catholic." She says it in a pejorative way, but I have always said that she is the anchor of my faith.

She has a way of distilling things and explaining things to me in a simple and straightforward way, that I am often caught off-guard. Many times, she in fact sees things that I have looked beyond because I am thinking "too hard" about things.

Just the other day she made a comment about giving our daughter a bath on Saturday nights because it would show her how special and important Mass is on Sunday. Just another small thing that I would have never thought about, or looked at in that way.

I know her comment doesn't seem like a big deal, and it probably doesn't seem like it is blog-worthy, but to me it is statements like that the ground my faith and keep me pointed in the right direction. I thank God for each and every one of her "little ways."

Not Sacred...or Divine... just, UGLY.

There are those that say, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Well, I believe that there should always be some intrinsic aesthetic value to "art"; Religious art should most definitely have such an intrinsic value.

Quite a few blogs such as: WDTPRS? and Sancte Pater have posted a picture from a foreign website Fides et Forma of a church called Santa Monica. It looks like this:

Now Father Z, and Vincenzo say that the church, from its profile looks a lot like a Sandcrawler from Star Wars.

Personally, I think it looks more like an Everlasting Gobstopper from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Regardless... it doesn't look like a Church.

Steak a la Chez Wolf by Julie

Well…the title is silly but it’s something a friend coined…

Ingredients:
I usually buy eye of round roast beef, it tends to be lean enough. Any other lean cut of steak will suffice as well.

Directions:
1 half pint of strawberries
half a bag of spinach
1/4 cup of balsamic vinegar
3 cloves garlic, chopped
3 shallots, sliced thinly

Get a frying pan medium hot and add a tablespoon of coconut oil. Add the garlic, shallots and strawberries. Push these around for a minute, and then add the balsamic vinegar.

Cook until the strawberries start to disintegrate.
Add spinach and cook until wilted. Move this mixture to the sides of the pan until the middle is clear.

Drop the steak on and cook to your liking. I like it rare, so I leave it there about a minute per side.

Serves 2.
