So that's where all the bears are...

I haven't really updated you all on my bear hunting quest/adventure with Dan from GLACC. Anyways... we have been out for the past two weeks setting up our baiting area hoping that we can draw something in. Well... a few sicknesses and escapades later... we finally got out there a few times and saw nothing.

Well, Badger Catholic has made a post that let me realize where all the bears are:

Springbrook, WI: A family that lives on the outskirts of Hayward, Wisconsin decided to build a sturdy, colorful playground for their 3- and 4-year-old sons. They lined the bottom with smooth-stone gravel all around to avoid knee scrapes and other injuries. They finished building it one Friday evening and were very pleased with the end product.

The following morning, the mom was about to wake the boys up and have them go out to play in their new play center. This is what she saw from the upstairs window

So Dan, here is our new hunting strategy:

  1. Donuts and Dog Food - OUT

  2. Playground for Bears - IN

"...One reason to Remain Catholic?"

A dear friend of mine shared with me a difficult situation yesterday. My friend, whom I will call, Deeply Frustrated, shared with us, a group of close friends from our Parish, a difficult question that was posed to them the other day.

Deeply Frustrated (DF) was talking with a friend of theirs who is a "fallen away Catholic" (FAC). FAC has some children the same age as DF does, and so they were talking about school and the summer vacation that is about to start. The topic of summer "Church events" came up, and the discussion eventually lead to the topic of Vacation Bible School. Unfortunately this year, it looks as if the local VBS won't occur, because of a multitude of reasons. The discussion moved from that, to the reasons why it won't occur, until the topic eventually got to the point where both parents were talking about the lack of programs in GENERAL for kids at the local parishes. DF explained to us, her friends, that she wasn't bashing the Parish, in fact she was trying to explain how a lot of people are trying to get things going, but just facing road-blocks. Then, FAC posed the question that shook DF, and shook all of us when she told us about it:
FAC said, "Give me one reason to be Catholic?" She explained that she can take her kids to any one of the other 20+ churches in town and have them get a better understanding of Christ. She knows that any of the other churches have programs, groups, and religious education programs that are in place that will "nourish" the children's faith better than what our Parish can provide. She could very well be horrifyingly correct.
DF had a million things they wanted to say, but knew that none of them would resonate. DF knew that FAC was theologically misguided, but knew that she was emotionally and logically very correct.

Now, before you start listing your theological and dogmatic answers, realize that the person posing this question has obviously had a multitude of things that have caused them to fall away. DF also couldn't argue with the fact that the local Catholic parishes are less than adequate with their Catechism and children's programming. So what was DF to do? She left it open ended, and said that the Parish is working on improving things, and left the conversation at a point where it can be picked back up again, but where to start?

I don't think that the lack of a strong Catechism program, no children's programming, or any other "lack" within the infrastructure of the Catholic church is a proper reason to leave, but how many times have we heard a story like this? You can trace it more than likely back to the poor formation of the PARENT when they were a child. So where do we start? In big cities and parishes that are well supported by an orthodox, the answer is a little easier, than in small town America where DRE's don't grow on trees.

The Catechesis of our parishes is central to the vibrancy of the Faith. What is so very perplexing is that modernists cry for easy to understand Missal translations, the absence of latin, and "production" style Masses so as to allow the faithful to more fully understand and participate in the faith. Yet, they are unwilling to TEACH the faith to the people for whatever reason. Is it because true knowledge would pull back the curtain on the "Wizard"? Possibly. But I think there is something more to it... and I can't quite place my finger on it. This situation though is critical... I have so much I want to say about the watering down of the faith, I just don't know where to begin.

People say that tradition and Catechesis isn't the way to revitalize the faith, and I say they are incorrect. After seeing what faith and reason have produced in other areas, and now being in a place where tradition lacks and modernism reigns, I think the soil is ripe for some "reform of the reform." I know there isn't a magic formula, but it has to start somewhere. You can't build Rome in day, but it won't ever be built if you don't lay the first brick. And if those wanting to rebuild it argue over where to lay the corner stone... it will never be built.

I don't have a perfect answer for DF to give to FAC, but I think this answer might buy DF some time: "If you ask that question, it means your heart WANTS to remain true to the faith. Sure, you may have lost hope, and faith has vanished, but the LOVE of Christ is still alive in your heart with the Holy Spirit. Hold fast to that, and re-commit yourself to the faith. Come to Mass, pray the Rosary, and roll up your sleeves and let's start rebuilding this thing together."

It might, it might not... but we have to lead by example... otherwise the sheep will continue to stray. If they stray, they will find greener pastures, even if they only appear greener... it's harder to lure them back, then to keep them here.

The Absent Men

Dave DiNuzzo over at TrueManhood.com recently posted on a topic that has always troubled me. The "Absent Male Syndrome." The Modern Catholic Church has suffered from the horrible effects of relativism and feminism. Both of these flawed philo-sociological "belief" systems have corrupted our society and wreaked havoc on the Faith. You can read his article "Where are the men?" below:
Tonight, we went to Mass at a local parish we had never been to. I’ve been wanting to go to a Mass there because I know several people who are parishioners at the parish who really like it. After tonight, I’m confused as to why. Besides the typical architectural disaster that this building was, the misplacement of the tabernacle and the lack of Catholic art (good statues, stained glass, etc.), the sense of what was about to happen was not Mass… it wasn’t sacred… it wasn’t important… it was just a thing. That’s what I got when I first walked in.

As Mass started, I was highly disappointed in what was taking place… a jazz concert masked by the appearance of a worship service. Between the really obnoxious singers (all mic’d up individually, ouch!) and the electronic drum set, I couldn’t figure out what was happening… was it about the music group? or about the Mass? In my mind, the music was winning, although it didn’t have much of a following in the congregation. As Mass continued, I realized what the problem was. It was shouting at me loud and clear…

There were virtually NO MEN in servant-leadership roles! The vast majority of the servant-leaders were women, which has almost nothing to do with the women, and everything to do with the men. When men don’t actively serve in parish life, specifically in the Mass, a parish is going to suffer. Here’s the scenario at this parish; these numbers are typical for most parishes around the country.
  • When we walked in, three women greeted us, no men were to be found. 0-3.
  • There were 3 altar servers, 2 were young girls. 1-5.
  • In the rockin’ jazz/pop/r&b, happy happy clap clap band there was 1 man, 7 women. 2-12.
  • There were 4 ushers… all women! 2-16. (Men weren’t even ushering, ahhh!!!)
  • Out of the excessive 9 Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, 2 were men. 4-23.
  • The ‘commentator’, lectors and cantor were all women. 4-27.
  • Oh yeah, the priest was a man. 5-27.
So, out of 32 servant-leadership positions, (31 really, when you remove the priest from the list) only 4 were filled by men! And one of those 4 was a 12 year-old boy altar server! This is despicable. Again, this has nothing to do with the women, and everything to do with the men! I’ll explain myself in more detail, in the next post… you’ve got to come back!

TrueMan up!
I think quite importantly Dave points out that: "...this has nothing to do with the women, and everything to do with the men!" What feminism has done, at least in the Church, is that it has prevented men, and caused men, to neglect their calling, and their natural tendency at leadership. Certainly there are parishes that push women into servant leadership roles above men for improper reasons (ie a false belief in feminist theory) but that isn't always the case. Many times the men simply choose not to be involved.

What causes this? The easy answer would be to just say that it is apathy, and that the men don't care. So the women step up, and should be applauded. But what if the reason the men don't step forward is that the problems listed in the first part of Dave's post prevent them from wanting to be involved. Is it possible that men don't want to involve themselves in a faith that they don't recognize or identify with? It is very possible, but what is the cause and what is the effect? At some point the faith in this country has to be reformed, and no offense to the women, but it can't be done with them alone. Remember, this isn't about the women, but completely about the men. The heads of our families, the leaders need to lead. The men need to step up and choose to reform the reform and take our true authentic faith back.
